In a few decades from now, the world’s fossil fuels have become near extinct, poverty has increased to the point where trailer parks tower higher than they are wide, and people prefer to spend their time living in a virtual online world known as OASIS. When I sat down at brunch in February 2009, I expected to have dumplings. What I got instead was so much more. As friends are wont to do, they challenged me to start doing Couch to 5K and preparing to run the Bronx Zoo Run for the Wild 5K. Not only did I run it (and besting their times), I continued running. Bigger and longer races until I reached the pinnacle, the New York Marathon.
In a journey that has taken almost 2 years, I am finally going to run my first marathon this Sunday. With over 60,000 runners traversing the landscape of New York City’s five boroughs, the ING NYC Marathon is the largest marathon in the world, and I look forward to taking my place on the starting line with all these other great athletes from around the world.
This past Sunday, I attempted to continue on my road to the 2012 ING NYC Marathon. Running nine qualifying races and volunteer to assist with one race guarantees entry into the following year’s marathon. The Poland Spring Marathon Kickoff, a 5 mile race in Central Park, was supposed to be my sixth race, but unfortunately it was not to be.
