When being active, there are those times we want to record it, either for our own edification or to share with the world. While all of our phones have cameras built in, they are not always the best solution at the time. It’s times like these that it is better to have a small action camera, like the Vivitar 786HD camera.
I’ve oft told the tale of how I started running because of a fateful brunch, and then escalated from there. From that Bronx Zoo 5k, I felt the desire to keep running, using it to challenge myself as I pushed to further distances until I set my sights on a marathon. It wasn’t until my friend Carolann called to tell me that the American Cancer Society had extra bibs for the 2011 NYC Marathon that I even dreamed of running such a prestigious race.
I had not run the Staten Island Half Marathon since 2013 due to different reasons over the last few years, but with a desire to qualify for the 2019 NYC Half Marathon and a need to get more miles under my feet for the NYC Marathon that was a mere weeks away, I finally was making my return to Staten Island in order to achieve both.
While training for the NYC Marathon, I wanted to get a few races in as part of my training. Since the NYRR Bronx 10 Mile was a fairly flat 10 mile out and back that also is also a qualifier for the NYC Half Marathon and the NYC Marathon, it was a perfect training run.
This past July, I was planning to go to San Francisco to cheer for Andrea as she ran a half marathon. It would have been a new experience for me to go on a runcation in which I wasn’t running, but a different decision was made. Since this trip fell in the middle of NYC Marathon training season, I was trying to figure out when I could get a run in during the trip when Andrea suggested I run it with her.
I’m always looking for good running headphones, and the less wires to get tangled up in, the better. That’s why I’ve become a fan of the current wave of wireless earbuds, and why I took out the Altec Lansing True EVO earbuds for a spin.
As races are run in New York during the year, they are often done with an eye towards the following year’s races. By running with New York Road Runners during the year, it is possible to gain entries for the New York City Marathon and New York City Half Marathon, and running the five borough series works towards entries for both.
Each year, the hardest half marathon to get into in New York is the NYC Half Marathon, but as a New York Road Runners member, it is possible to run four out of six races – one for each of the boroughs plus the NYC Half itself – to gain an automatic entry into the NYC Half. With the London Marathon and my completion of the World Marathon Majors in the rear view, I wanted to get entry for the 2019 half marathon, so the first step for me was to run the NYRR Popular Brooklyn Half Marathon.
When I started running, it was an idle hobby. I had been working from home as an independent contractor and wanted a way to get outside in the middle of the work day to get a break from spending all my time in the same four walls. It was at a fateful brunch where my friends challenged each other to run a 5k at the Bronx Zoo, and little did I know where it would lead.
We have entered a digital world where everyone carries a smartphone and everything seems to need an app. Every event and every company puts out their own app, so it only makes sense that writing code becomes a skill for all ages to learn. No Starch publishing is doing their part to bring that skill to younger folks with Coding iPhone Apps For Kids.
