This past Sunday, I attempted to continue on my road to the 2012 ING NYC Marathon. Running nine qualifying races and volunteer to assist with one race guarantees entry into the following year’s marathon. The Poland Spring Marathon Kickoff, a 5 mile race in Central Park, was supposed to be my sixth race, but unfortunately it was not to be.
A sudden snowstorm ran through New York on Saturday, which caused major damage in the tri state area. Even now, days later, millions of people are without electricity and aren’t expected to have it return for days, weeks, or months. With trees falling and other assorted potential calamities, the New York Parks Department closed all parks in the city of New York. As such, the race had to be canceled.
With the race canceled, I got credit towards the 9+1, but I also learned that it was a poor idea to sign up for a race on Halloween weekend, when it is considered by everyone else to be a good weekend to go out and party.
This week, I will be completing my volunteer credit when I assist with registrations for the 2011 NYC marathon, then I will be running the marathon myself on Sunday, with American Cancer Society‘s Team Determination. To make a donation and support my run, please do so here.
