When I went to Florida to run the Goofy at the Walt Disney World Marathon, I decided I would go visit family in Fort Lauderdale before trekking up to Orlando to run. Since the two cities are approximately three hours apart, I reached out to my friends at Chevrolet about borrowing a car while I was down there and they lent me a 2013 Camaro SS convertible.
For the past two years, I’ve headed down to Walt Disney World to run during the Marathon Weekend. In 2011, I ran my first half marathon (the Donald) and in 2012, I ran the full marathon around Walt Disney World (the Mickey), but having completed both, there was one other possible goal to achieve during the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend, and that’s the Goofy – running both the half and full marathons in a single weekend.
Growing up, the most prevalent characters were from Walt Disney, Marvel Comics and Jim Henson. Mickey Mouse, Spider-Man and the Muppets were central icons to my formative years, but my childhood centered around Star Wars. The adventures of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia as they battled Darth Vader captured my young imagination through three movies and the occasional television special. Even through the 80s, when most of the Star Wars fandom died, I kept a small piece of it somewhere in my life until it grew again in the mid-90s. This week, George Lucas has decided not only to step down from the Star Wars universe, but to sell it to the Walt Disney Corp.
